Opening with one of the most familiar and popular theme songs, TV show “Friends” holds a special place in the history of American pop culture. Names like Rachel and Chandler immediately resonated with people all around the country. Interestingly, "Rachel" not only reminded people of the character, but of the famous hairstyle Jennifer Aniston sported through much of the series, one setting a frenzy of haircuts for women across the nation. A hairstyle clearly makes a difference to Americans. Nowadays, a more dramatic approach to having a new look has appeared on the scene: having short hair. For a number of reasons and with a surprising number of styles, short hair has taken a special place in the world of women's fashion.

Part of what makes short hairstyles so popular is the overwhelmingly positive effects on a woman's image. While many insist that men prefer women with long hair versus short hair, the latter can provide a simple way of looking thinner and younger. For the diminutive price of a haircut, a woman can reduce more pounds and years than with makeup, and certainly for similar time spent working out. In addition, short hair makes for less time spent on maintenance, leaving extra time for beauty sleep, deciding on an outfit for the day, or whatever else one intends to do with the free time.

Short hairstyles come in far greater variety than the lessened amount of hair might suggest. Bobs come in very short or safer, longer lengths, depending on how adventurous a woman feels at the salon. Longer bobs can aid in lengthening a round face, while a shorter bob could just as easily add a horizontal line to make the face appear wider. Short haircuts work with more formal styles, such as updos, as well. Despite even having hair too short for updos, an accessory of some sort, or veils for those willing on a very special occasion, offer women with short hair a means of more professional looks. Whatever the reason for considering a short cut, plenty of software exists to look at pictures of what one would look like with the new hairdo. Besides comparing pictures of different short hair looks on other people, she may as well have a better concept of what it will look like on her before investing in a look that could last a while.

Hair plays a critical role in the way people perceive others. It baffles few, then, that when women want to dramatically change and improve their looks, they often opt for the short hair. For those who have avoided taking that leap in the past, it may well be worth a shot; anyone could be the sudden inspiration for the new "Rachel" look, or "Kate" or "Maya" look. It only takes a single person who is willing to take the chance.
